best shotgun for home / perimeter defense

What's the best shotgun for general household / perimeter defense? I have a 9mm and a 40 caliber, both glocks. I would imagine during "normal times" I would use the glocks for home defense. But during worse times, I thought a shotgun would be great. Possibly an AR-15 too, since I live on 100 acres in the Nashville, TN area.

As far as shotguns go, I don't much about them. Looking for something that's easy to maintain and high capacity. 7 shots would be great...if possible.

Was thinking of a Remington 870? Or one of the Mossbergs? Any recommendations?

Hard to beat the 870 value and quality. I have one and love it.

How many shells can you put in an 870 without doing modifications? And what type of shells do you recommend?

If you decide to pull the trigger on this You better move and QUICK these are flying off shelves at the speed of light This will be in the top ten if the AWB kicks up again

870 is a great shotgun (they have express that can hold seven shells)as well if I where you I would get em both!!

The remington 870 comes in a configuration that hold 7 rounds...here it is.

The magazine is as long as the barrel, which you want to be short to maneuver through doorways.

I bought this configuration and it doubles as a hunting rifle.

Here's a picture of it with a surefire weapon light, which replaced the factory fore-end....In case the bad guys come at night.

870 marine Magnum or police magnum. I'm a little biased since I just got one.

A little more expensive than the others but damn it's nice. Mine holds 7+1.

If I ever get a saiga, I'd do the conversion to SBR.

Some company or other was selling them for around 1700

Yea what they said, basically 6 in the tube.

I pretty much buy whatever is on sale for practicing with, I put 00 Buckshot in it for defense.

Re: best shotgun for home / perimeter defense

Call me a cheapskate, but my preferred shotgun is an NEF Pardner Protector Pump, 12 ga. 18 1/2-inch barrel. Got it for $169 plus tax about 9 mos ago. If you are just going for home defense (not for hunting, trap, skeet, etc.) then a Protector will suffice.
My wife has a 12 ga. Mossberg 500 combo pump. That was on sale for $239 at a local gun shop. This will also work if need be.
You might consider the low-recoil 12 ga. buckshot. Same effect, less shoulder pain.

Anything based on the Mossberg 500 or the Remington 870 with a short barrel, they are all good. The Mossberg 590 with ghost ring sights and heat shield is sweet. I have a Remington 870 Marine Magnum, electroless nickle coated.

You might look at some shops and check out the variety of sights available. The traditional front bead, ghost ring or rifle sights.

my 870 was under $300 i dont remember what the price was, i don't skimp on weapons and I prefer to buy Made in USA stuff. If I ever have to defend myself it will be the best $300 I have ever spent :D

That's a Saiga 12 with the pistol grip, folding stock and shortened barrel.

The Model 1300 Defender was discontinued. Good luck finding anybody willing to part with one.

Winchesters are good guns, but they do not have the reputation for reliability and they do not have the massive parts base available in the market as do the 870 and the 500.

NOT the same effect! LESS effect! Physics tells us that! You have less energy down range at the target with low recoil loads.

Well how far a distance do you plan on shooting? At 25 yards, yeah, it will likely have less effect. Anything beyond that distance, you would be better off with a rifle anyway. In regards to home defense, when you are talking distances of 10 yards or less, low-recoil 12 ga. 00 buck would be perfectly sufficient and would allow many users a better chance at an aimed follow-up shot.

Thanks guys for all the feedback...

Is the best way to store ammo just to use the army ammo boxes with the rubber seal on them? I have some of them, though I might store some ammo for my glocks and the shotgun to keep it as dry and air-free as possible.

You are on the right tract with your thoughts. For storage "long term" it is kind of like storing your food stuffs, the cooler and more stable you can keep the temperature the better it will be for your product. Desiccant packs inside the cans will help too, but most will agree that you should NOT use O2 absorbers in the cans with your ammo. Do not open and close your cans just to get some rounds out to go shoot as you will be introducing fresh, possibly moisture laden air in each time you open the can. Keep the ammo that you intend to use "soon" in separate cans or even on a shelf separate from you long term stock. Make sure the rubber seals are good on your cans, and the tops "lock down" tightly. With these methods your ammo should be good for as long as you care about.

I'll check the blog, but I beleive it was brought back, improved, a couple of years ago - I bought a pair for the price of one regular one on a very special deal..........oddly, someone who used to chat here named them for me.......Yin and Yang! (I always tell people - Yang, the male, is loaded with buckshot.......Yin, the female, is loaded with something worse........."Whats worse than buckshot?", they ask....."DOEshot, its ice cold!!!" It generally takes a minute or two for them to get the joke.)

That would have been a great selling point had I known that at the time!

THANK YOU BOTH FOR YOUR RESPONSES!!!
